SWK 632 Introduction to Cognitive Behavior Therapy

(3-0-3) This course will introduce students to the evidence-based practice of Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT). This course will review the origins of the CBT model and will provide an overview of the theoretical framework. Students will develop skills necessary to effectively implement the CBT model which will include learning how to build a therapeutic relationship and learning how to structure sessions. CBT has proven to be effective in treating various mental health diagnoses. Ethical considerations and diversity are a point of focus in this course such as treating complex disorders as well as methods to reducing suicide risk. This is the second required course within the Clinical Social Work concentration of the MSW program.
