Space Systems Engineering Area – Bachelor of Science

The Bachelor of Science in Space Systems Engineering is an interdisciplinary astronautical engineering program that requires students to complete coursework in physics, mathematics, electronics, telecommunications, propulsion, structures, and materials, and control systems.

Program Competencies

To ensure the success of our graduates, we prepare them to achieve the following Program Educational Objectives (Program Competencies)

The student will:

  1. Perform effectively as engineers in their discipline by utilizing their training and experiences in space systems engineering (and related disciplines of electrical, mechanical, communications and systems engineering) in the engineering design process.

  2. Evolve their problem-solving and critical thinking skills, deepen their knowledge of relevant systems, and expand their engineering skills and processes to solve complex problems in space and related technologies.

  3. Expand their use of engineering methodologies, principles and toolsets toward the development or improvement of technical systems, products and processes designed to meet constituent requirements and standards.

  4. Demonstrate strong ethical, teamwork, communication and project management skills to lead or contribute to engineering projects in diverse environments with multidisciplinary and multicultural teams.

Assessment

This program adopts the ABET Student Outcomes outlined here:

  1. An ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics.

  2. An ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors.

  3. An ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences.

  4. An ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, considering the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts.

  5. An ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives.

  6. An ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions.

  7. An ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies.

These outcomes will be evaluated and assessed by:

  1. Performance in course activities

  2. Performance in individual courses

  3. Performance on Capstone Design Project

  4. Acceptance rates into job markets and/or graduate school

Program Requirements

Students must earn a grade of C or better in all courses designated as program requirement courses within the Space Systems Engineering curriculum. Any required course in which a student earns a grade lower than C must be repeated in order to receive credit toward the degree. This policy applies to all major requirements, supporting courses, and prerequisite courses specified by the program.
