SWK 652 Assessment, Diagnosis, and Treatment of Substance Use Disorders
(3-0-3) This course provides a survey of the current evidence-based assessment tools and treatment approaches used with persons with substance use disorders. This includes a review of motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral therapy, solution focused brief therapy, harm reduction practices, peer-based treatment models, and medication assisted treatment options. Students will practice skills related to assessment and diagnosis, and will be challenged to utilize critical thinking, collaboration, and consultation to determine the most appropriate treatment(s) for each individual client. This is the second required course within the Substance Use Disorders concentration of the MSW program.
