SWK 651 Foundations of Substance Use Disorder Counseling

(3-0-3) This course introduces students to the history and ethics of substance use disorder (SUD) treatment as well as state, local, and federal policies and practices that impact SUD treatment. Students will explore a broad range of topics including the medical and psychosocial models of substance use disorders, assessment tools, various treatment options, co-occurring disorders, the impact of substance use disorders on the family, and the role of self-help groups. This is the first of two required courses within the Substance Use Disorders concentration of the MSW program.
