SWK 340 Introduction to Mental Health and Mental Illness

(3-0-3) This course provides an introductory review of the field of mental health. Societal attitudes, stigma, and treatment of individuals with mental illnesses throughout history will be surveyed, with emphasis on present-day attitudes, and the public and private agency systems and professional disciplines currently addressing mental health needs. Basic symptoms and criteria for common mental disorders will be examined, along with treatment approaches and the types of ethical concerns that could arise in the care of the mentally ill.
