Community Support Services Major – Bachelor of Arts

The department offers a non-teaching major and minor for students who would like to work in community agencies providing guidance and support to those with disabilities. This may include positions in supported living, supported employment, service coordination, or family support. The minor is particularly appropriate for individuals majoring in psychology, social work, or other areas of human services.

Program Competencies

Students will:

  1. Describe the processes and procedures required under IDEA.
  2. Demonstrate understanding of post-secondary transition planning for young adults with disabilities.
  3. Apply the KY Department of Education's criteria for the identification of each disability area in IDEA.
  4. Describe the principles of learning, social and behavioral characteristics of students with disabilities.
  5. Participate in data collection, planning for behavior change, and implementing interventions with a specific student or client.
  6. Develop a program plan for a client with the agency's representative, and where appropriate, the family and client's participation.
  7. Implement lesson planning based on data collection.
  8. Modify a program plan as needed based on data.
  9. Define and utilize person-centered planning in a community setting.
  10. Use professional terminology for persons with disabilities and the processes implemented for the needs of a person with disabilities.
