NURB 261 Clinical Judgment

(3-0-3) Restriction: Admission to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program (BSN), pre-licensure component. This course is designed to equip first year nursing students with the tools they need to be successful within the BSN program and ultimately as they transition into nursing practice.

This course outlines how to use clinical judgment when encountering patient scenarios, prioritizing patient needs and ultimately making safe, evidence-based decisions that lead to quality patient outcomes. Students will learn how to think critically by using the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) Model of Clinical Judgment. Upon receiving patient information through case studies, students will learn to draw on the clinical judgment competencies to process patient information and make situation-based decisions. Students will work to understand the “why” behind clinical decision making throughout the course to prevent medical error and failure to rescue in the clinical setting upon graduation.

Additionally, the course will focus on dosage calculation, care planning, concept mapping and effective communication, with an emphasis on basic principles of quality and safety. This course will address areas of time management and test taking strategies with an emphasis on effective studying techniques.

*Note: Students must be concurrently enrolled in the following required courses along with NURB 260, NURB 261, NURB 262, and BIOL 217 & 217L. If a student has PCC deficit from high school (i.e., foreign language, humanities) listed on their program evaluation, students must complete the required courses prior to graduation. Students must complete all courses successfully in order to progress to the next semester in the program. Students must also take all courses in sequence for each semester as listed in the program sequence pattern.
